Role
Solution Architect in IT Governance: architectural guardrails for modernizing the contract management landscape.
Context
Debeka serves roughly 7.5 million members and manages about 21.5 million contracts. Modernizing its core contract management landscape is one of the company's largest transformation programs, with more than 600 developers involved.
The task
Grown, business-critical legacy applications around contract management have to be replaced in a structured way while insurance operations continue without interruption.
Constraints
- More than 600 developers whose work needs consistent architectural guardrails
- Contract portfolios in life insurance and pensions that run for decades
- Replacement during live operations of a regulated insurance company
Architectural approach
Architecture work at governance level: evaluating solution options and defining architectural guardrails together with engineering teams, enterprise architects, and business stakeholders, from design principles to integration patterns.
Shaping the architecture and modernization of core insurance contract management capabilities, including the structured replacement of legacy applications.
Advancing the replacement of the Riester system within the life insurance and pension landscape: modernizing business-critical contract, product, and integration processes.
Key decisions
Guardrails over case-by-case rulings
At this program size, principles and patterns carry further than one-off decisions. Design principles and integration patterns make architectural choices repeatable across teams.
Maintainability as an explicit quality goal
Systems with lifecycles measured in decades justify standards that optimize for long-term maintainability over short-term delivery speed.
Structured replacement of legacy applications
Replacement follows an ordered path along business capabilities so that operating the existing portfolios stays safe at all times.
